Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Magaly Quintana
Magaly Quintana era conocida por muchxs en Nicaragua como 'La Maga'. Fue una historiadora feminista, activista y defensora inquebrantable de los derechos de las mujeres que exigía justicia para las víctimas de femicidio.
Magaly se comprometió a documentar y elaborar estadísticas sobre las mujeres y niñas que fueron asesinadas como resultado de la violencia sexual en el país.
"Ella reconstruyó la vida de cada una, de sus familias, para mostrar así las vidas que habían sido destrozadas". - Dora María Téllez
Magaly también criticó al gobierno por la reforma de la Ley 779 que trata la violencia contra las mujeres. Como resultado del arduo trabajo de los movimientos de mujeres nicaragüenses, esta ley, antes de su reforma, incluía importantes disposiciones para penalizar el femicidio. Magaly argumentó que estas reformas legislativas debilitaban la ley, y limitaban la definición de los femicidios a homicidios, invisibilizando, como resultado, los delitos violentos contra las mujeres.
La organización feminista de Magaly se fundó a principios de los ‘80. Fue la directora de Mujeres Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir, que defiende el derecho al aborto terapéutico tras su prohibición en 2006. En 2018, apoyó las protestas contra el gobierno de Daniel Ortega.
Magaly nació en mayo de 1952 y falleció en mayo de 2019.

2018: Apoyo a los movimientos feministas para que prosperen y desestabilicen
Este informe recuerda y celebra el primer año del nuevo plan estratégico de AWID, cuando dimos nuestros primeros pasos hacia los resultados deseados: el apoyo a los movimientos feministas para que prosperen, la impugnación de las agendas antiderechos, y la creación conjunta de realidades feministas.
Trabajamos con feministas para desestabilizar las agendas antiderechos, y logramos importantes victorias, peleadas y ganadas dentro del sistema de Naciones Unidas, cuando se logró la inclusión de lenguaje innovador sobre discriminación estructural, derechos sexuales y obligaciones de los Estados en una cantidad de resoluciones. Sí, el sistema multilateral está en crisis y necesita un sólido fortalecimiento, pero estas victorias son importantes, ya que contribuyen a la legitimidad de las demandas feministas, brindando a los movimientos feministas más puntos de presión y más impulso para promover nuestras agendas.
Ensayamos y pusimos a prueba distintas formas de construir conocimientos con los movimientos feministas a través de seminarios en línea, podcasts y conversaciones «en vivo». Desarrollamos guías de facilitación con educadorxs populares para recuperar saberes en pos de la justicia social y de género, incluso sobre un tópico tan aparentemente opaco como los flujos financieros ilícitos. Auspiciamos blogs y opiniones sobre cómo los grupos feministas obtienen fondos y recursos, y señalamos las amenazas que enfrentan nuestros sistemas de derechos humanos.
Dentro de AWID, pusimos en práctica y aprendimos de nuestro enfoque de liderazgo compartido, y relatamos la historia de las dificultades y tribulaciones de dirigir conjuntamente una organización global virtual. No tenemos una respuesta definitiva sobre cómo es un liderazgo feminista, pero un año más tarde sabemos que el compromiso continuo con la experimentación y el aprendizaje colectivos nos ha permitido seguir construyendo una organización con la cual nos entusiasma contribuir.
Al recordar este año, queremos agradecer a todxs nuestrxs amigxs y promotorxs, colegas y compañerxs, que han aportado su tiempo y han compartido su bagaje de conocimiento y sabiduría con nosotrxs. Queremos agradecer a nuestrxs afiliadxs, que han ayudado a construir nuestro plan estratégico y se han unido a nosotrxs para formular demandas feministas. No podríamos hacer este trabajo sin ustedes.
Love letter to feminist movements: A goodbye from Hakima and Cindy
Dear feminist movements,
You welcomed us with open arms when it was announced during the 2016 AWID Forum in Bahia that we would be AWID’s new Co-EDs. It was a moment that felt full of possibility, we were building a feminist oasis that would help sustain our collective struggles forward. We left Bahia with a sharp sense of responsibility, to do our best in your service and to lead AWID in ways that would be most supportive and impactful for you.
It is now time for us to step aside for new leadership!
Over five years into our journey, we are stepping down as AWID’s Co-EDs. Our decision comes as we wrap up the current strategic cycle. We see this as an ideal moment to step aside and support a leadership refresh. We believe that transformative feminist leadership is cyclical.
We so appreciate the opportunity we had to play a role in AWID’s 40 year history, holding and shepherding the organization through the difficult context of global pandemic, and so many spiraling crises.
Feminist movements, we know you will be part of our next journey, whatever that may be. You have consistently taught us about strength and resilience. We may move to different roles, but we will collectively continue to move together.
How We Moved
We have vivid memories of those of you in Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, Taiwan and beyond who met us to co-create the AWID Forum with so much generosity and spark. Without a doubt, our greatest regret from the last five years is that we could not give you an in-person Forum.
Once we came to the difficult (albeit necessary) decision to cancel the AWID Forum, we focused on grappling with the existential questions so many of our organizations were facing: how do we shift our ways of working to be relevant, account for the exhaustion, sickness, and grief affecting all of us in different ways? How do we build meaningful relationships when we are limited to being online? There are still no straightforward answers to these questions, but feminist movements, you have shown the way.
We were so proud to see the ways feminists were leading responses to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on our communities. Feminists are frontline responders in crisis and we will continue to demand recognition and resources for this work. You often responded enthusiastically to our outreach, showing up in amazing ways in our Feminist Bailout campaign and later in the Crear Resister Transform festival. You jumped into collaborative advocacy with us – whether influencing human rights spaces, policy makers or funders.
Our work with you inspired us at AWID to make an important pivot in expanding opportunities for engagement among our members that is not centralized through AWID. We call this a solidarity-based approach to membership and we are excited to be launching this year the AWID Community platform.
You taught us that, since we can’t count on the system, what is especially important is that we show up for each other. We hope that what we did well over these years was to make space for new and deeper relationships and possibilities of mutual support and collaboration.

We give a special shout-out of love and respect to the current and former AWID team (both our staff and Board members) whom we’ve had the honor to work with over these years. We’ve learned from each one of you and felt deep gratitude for everything you have contributed to AWID over the years.
We came into this role as AWID’s first pair of Co-Executive Directors. We learned from the many activist and community traditions of collective leadership and the feminist organizations who had done this before us. We know that we couldn’t have done this job without each other. We were able to leverage each other’s strengths and have each other’s backs to do the best job we could.
What’s Next
We came into role together and are leaving together, even as we will be staggering our departure dates. We are both committed to supporting a smooth transition and deliberate onboarding of the new leadership this year.
Feminist movements, you are in great hands with the AWID team. They’ve got this. And we are proud to be leaving the organization in such a strong and resilient place. Hopefully, we’ll see many of you at the AWID Forum in 2024 – you’ll recognize us as the kicked back, relaxed folks in the audience!
Love and appreciation for all that you’ve done with and for us. Your impact on our lives stretches well beyond the last 5 years, and no doubt will continue to stretch far into the future.

Janet Benshoof
Janet Benshoof était une avocate des droits humains oeuvrant aux États-Unis et défenseure de l’égalité des femmes et de leurs droits sexuels et reproductifs.
Elle a milité pour l’élargissement de l’accès à la contraception et à l’avortement dans le monde entier, et s’est battue contre des décisions anti-avortement dans le territoire américain de Guam. Arrêtée en 1990 pour son opposition à la loi anti-avortement la plus restrictive de son pays, elle a remporté une mise en demeure [MB1] au tribunal local à Guam qui a bloqué la loi, pour ensuite remporter l’affaire devant la Cour d’Appel de Ninth Circuit, décision qui devait supprimer définitivement celle-ci.

Janet a créé plusieurs précédents juridiques, dont l’approbation par l’US Food and Drug Administration de la contraception d’urgence, ainsi que l’application du droit international afin de garantir leurs droits aux victimes de viol lors des poursuites pour crimes de guerre de l’époque de Saddam Hussein, devant la Cour Suprême iraqienne.
Janet était présidente et fondatrice du Global Justice Center, ainsi que fondatrice du Center for Reproductive Rights, la première organisation internationale pour les droits humains, centrée sur le choix reproductif et l’égalité. Elle a siégé pendant 15 ans en tant que directrice du projet pour les droits reproductifs de l’American Civil Liberties Union, où elle a mené de nombreuses procédures juridiques qui ont contribué à façonner la loi constitutionnelle des États-Unis sur l’égalité de genre, la liberté d’expression et les droits reproductifs.

Née en mai 1947, Janet est décédée en décembre 2017.
2022: Transiciones, Inspiración & Poder Colectivo
Nuestro plan estratégico “Realidades Feministas” completó su último año a finales de 2022. Durante los últimos cinco años, este intrépido marco nos empujó a ir más allá de los futuros feministas y a reconocer las soluciones y formas de vida feministas que ya existen aquí y ahora. Realidades que deben ser enaltecidas, celebradas y popularizadas. El proyecto de historias multimedia Las Economías Feministas que Amamos y el centro de conocimiento Our Resource sobre modos autónomos de dotar de recursos al activismo feminista son sólo dos ejemplos de este trabajo visionario, siempre profundamente colectivo y en colaboración con diversos movimientos feministas.

Faye Macheke es una apasionada feminista panafricana, que participa en movimientos por los derechos de las mujeres, la justicia racial, los derechos laborales y de las personas migrantes, y la justicia ambiental. Su activismo se ha alimentado del legado de la lucha contra el apartheid en Sudáfrica y del período posterior a la época del apartheid en Zimbabue. En 2019 Faye se incorporó a AWID como Directora de Finanzas, Operaciones y Desarrollo. Aporta una amplia experiencia en liderazgo feminista, estrategia y todos los aspectos del desarrollo organizativo. Faye es una comprometida integrante de la Junta Directiva de UAF-África y de otras organizaciones por los derechos de las mujeres. Vive en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica. |

Inna Michaeli es una activista y socióloga feminista lesbiana queer, con muchos años de profundo compromiso con las luchas feministas y LGBTQI+, con educación política y activismo por y para mujeres migrantes y con la liberación de Palestina y la solidaridad con su pueblo. Inna se unió a AWID en 2016 y se desempeñó en diferentes funciones, más recientemente, como Directora de Programas. Contribuye con su extensa experiencia en investigación y construcción de conocimiento, promoción de políticas, y desarrollo organizativo. Inna integra la Junta Directiva de Jewish Voice for Peace (Alemania). Reside en Berlín, Alemania. |
Esta decisión es el resultado de un riguroso proceso que contó con la total participación de la Junta Directiva y el personal de AWID. La Junta reconoció y homenajeó las aptitudes y los talentos del personal de AWID, abriendo una búsqueda interna para la contratación. En consecuencia, se presentaron juntas, como equipo, dos candidatas brillantes que personifican la integridad, la ética del cuidado y los valores feministas interseccionales que impulsan el trabajo de AWID. Faye e Inna propusieron una valiente e interesante visión para enfrentar los desafíos de este momento: construir una comunidad feminista global, resistir y desestabilizar los sistemas de opresión y apoyar a los movimientos feministas para que prosperen.
Este año, en que AWID celebra sus 40 años, nos emociona que Inna y Faye co-lideren a AWID en sus estrategias y en una nueva fase de evolución y superación de las fronteras, apoyando a los movimientos feministas de todo el mundo.
Designar y apoyar a las Co-directoras Ejecutivas de AWID para que lideren la organización es una responsabilidad fiduciaria que, como Junta Directiva, tomamos muy seriamente. La forma en que desarrollamos esos procesos es también un reflejo de la brillante y diversa membresía de AWID, que elige a la Junta de AWID.
Al despedirnos de Cindy y Hakima, nosotrxs, la Junta Directiva, damos la bienvenida en forma unánime y entusiasta a Faye e Inna como nuestras próximas Co-directoras Ejecutivas a partir del 5 de septiembre de 2022. Manténganse atentxs a las actualizaciones sobre nuestra transición de liderazgo en los próximos meses.

Mena Mangal
Mena Mangal was a prominent TV journalist, women’s rights advocate and cultural adviser to Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of Afghanistan's national parliament.
For more than a decade, she worked for Ariana TV, Tolo TV's Pashto-language channel Lamar, and the private Afghan national television broadcaster Shamshad TV. As a presenter, Mena focused on women’s rights and cultural talk shows.
"Women's rights activist Wazhma Frogh said Mangal "had a loud voice" and actively spoke out as an advocate for her people."
Off-screen, she also ran popular social media pages that advocated for the rights of Afghan girls and women to education and work. In terms of her private life, Mena wrote extensively about being forced into an arranged marriage in 2017 and the process she had to go through to finally obtain a divorce.
In a Facebook post, Mena wrote she was receiving death threats from unknown sources but would continue to carry out her work.
On 11 May 2019, she was attacked by unknown gunmen and shot dead in broad daylight in a public space in Southeast Kabul.

Isabel Marler
Biography
Isabel is a feminist from the United Kingdom with over a decade of experience in feminist responses to fascisms, fundamentalisms, and anti-rights trends. At AWID, her work centers on knowledge-building and has included leading the production of the Rights at Risk series in collaboration with the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). She holds a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and previously worked with Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML). She is passionate about cross-movement work, movement-centered knowledge-building, and the use of creative expression to disrupt systems of oppression. Outside of work, Isabel is active in various disability justice spaces for collective care, learning, and advocacy.
